Statistics and location
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (IATA: BWI), locally known as BWI or BWI Marshall, is the busiest of the three serving the Washington-Baltimore area. It operates several domestic, international and some intercontinental flights, serving not only the Washington DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas, but also the state of Maryland and parts of Virginia. Because of this, it experiences heavy passenger traffic and is undergoing expansion and improvements.

The airport is a hub for Southwest Airlines. In 2023, it saw 26.2 million passengers pass through it. It is located in Maryland, 14 km (9 miles) south of downtown Baltimore and 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Washington, DC. (SEE MAP)

Terminals

The airport, officially named Thurgood Marshall, has a passenger terminal subdivided into five concourses (A, B, C, D, E) and two levels (upper and lower). These concourses form a kind of horseshoe, with a large hourly parking garage platform and transportation services located at its center.

MTA MARC Train
Connects the Amtrak/MARC station with various destinations in the vicinity, such as Union Station in Washington, Penn Station in Baltimore, New Carrollton, Seabrook, Bowie State, etc.

MTA Light Rail
MTA's light rail service offers fast transportation between BWI and downtown Baltimore, Timonium and Hunt Valley.

AMTRAK
Operates between the Amtrak/MARC station and Washington DC, Philadelphia, Wilmington and Alexandria.

MTA Commuter bus 201
The bus stops at Shady Grove, Georgia Avenue Park & Ride, Burtonsville Park & Ride, Arundel Mills Mall and Gaithersburg Park and Ride Lot.

MTA Bus Services
Route 75 connects Baltimore Airport with Parkway Center, Arundel Mills Mall, Airport 100 Park and the light rail stop at Patapsco.

Anne Arundel County
The free County Connector service travels to Live! Casino & Hotel, Arundel Mills Mall, Arundel Preserve, Dorchester Woods and Mathison Way from the Amtrak/MARC station at BWI.

Taxi and ridesharing services

Taxis are regulated by the Local County Government and the Maryland Aviation Administration. The travel time is approximately 20 minutes to/from downtown Baltimore. Taxi stands are located outside the baggage claim area (lower level of the terminal), near gates 5 and 13.

Lyft and Uber vehicles pick up their passengers at the terminal curb, on the upper level (Departures).

Renting a car directly at the airport is a good idea, especially if your final destination is Washington DC, due to the long distances in the metropolitan area. Car rental facilities at BWI Marshall are located at 7432 New Ridge Road, on the west side of the premises.
